A tribute to those who keep the craft tradition alive

The island’s traditional trades form part of a cultural legacy passed down from one generation to the next. The skills, knowledge, and techniques developed by artisans reflect a unique way of understanding the land, maintaining a direct connection with local materials and with the history of Fuerteventura.

This tribute video highlights the work and dedication of those who continue to bring these trades to life. Thanks to their efforts, the craft tradition continues to evolve without losing its essence, becoming a key element of the island’s cultural heritage.

Fuerteventura's Crafts , Cultural Heritage

The traditional crafts of Fuerteventura belong to the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands. The practical skills, knowledge and handcrafted objects produced by Canarian artisans reflect a unique way of relating to the environment, using the local materials provided by the island territory.

Mud, sand, palm leaves, goat skin, stones, reed stalks... have been some of the local raw materials used in the creation of traditional crafts for everyday or ritual use by the ancient artisans of Fuerteventura. Other materials, knowledge and working tools were contributed by the various settlers who arrived on our shores with the conquest of the island and its subsequent colonisation.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

All this craft knowledge has come down to us today as a result of generational transmission and continuous learning and recreation by the hands of craftsmen and craftswomen. It is our obligation and responsibility to ensure that future generations have access to this knowledge and skills.

This craft heritage, both tangible and intangible, is not meant to be kept in drawers, showcases or hard disks. It is craft objects that want to be used, traditional materials waiting to be manipulated, skills and knowledge that want to be recreated. It is a cultural heritage that belongs to life, to the ceaseless course of life.
